The transition back to Singapore, in the midst of the pandemic, has been an extremely intense and emotional experience. I feel that this work summarises my life as a nonbinary person, living in a cis world. There is an expectation for me to have an explanation about myself ready at all times when the reality is that I just am who I am.

Aki Hassan is a multi-disciplinary artist who shifts between drawing, printed matter, sculpture and installation. They studied in Glasgow School of Art, pursuing the Sculpture & Environmental Art course. Drawing has always been an important part of their practice, however Glasgow opened them to comics as a format, to explore mental health and its intersections with their nonbinaryhood. Despite having to return to their home country in the midst of the global pandemic, the independent illustration and comic communities that they’ve met across Scotland will forever be close to their heart.
